10 historical places to visit in Ibiza

If you love to know the story of Ibiza through its ancient monuments and archaeological remains, here there are the places to visit around the island protected by Bes and Tanit.

Si os gusta conocer la historia de Ibiza a través de sus antiguos monumentos y restos arqueológicos, aquí estan mis consejos sobre los sitios históricos y arqueológicos que hay que visitar en mi amada isla protegida por Bes y Tanit.

Se amate conoscere la storia di Ibiza attraverso i suoi antichi monumenti e resti archeologici, ecco miei consigli sui luoghi storici ed archeologici da visitare nell’ isola protetta da Bes e da Tanit.

1.Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta- Poblado fenicio de Sa Caleta- Insediamento Fenicio di Sa Caleta

It was the first settlement founded by the Phoenicians in the VII b.C. when they arrived in Ibiza. You can enjoy the view and imagine the beauty they found when they landed on the island. The red earth that contrasts with the blue sea is always impressive.

Fue el primer asentamiento fundado por los fenicios en el VII a. C. cuando llegaron a Ibiza. Merece la pena visitar el promontorio que lo hospeda, seguramente para la vista que tiene y para que podais imaginas la belleza que encontaron cuando aterrizaron en la isla. La tierra roja que contrasta con el azul del mar es siempre un espectáculo de la naturaleza.

E’ il primo insediamento fondato dai Fenici nel VIII a. C. quando arrivarono ad Ibiza, ma vale la pena fare una passeggiata sul promontorio che lo ospita, sia per la bellissima vista sia per immaginare la bellezza che trovarono quando sbarcarono sull’ isola. La terra rossa che contrasta con l’azzurro del mare è sempre uno spettacolo della Natura.

2. Es Culleram

It is located in the north of island on the road between Cala San Vicente and San Juan. It is a natural cave used as a sanctuary by Phoenician. It was discovered at the beginning of XX century and they found numerous votive statues dedicated to the Carthaginian goddess Tanit, who is still loved and considered the protector of’ island. You can admire the artifacts at the Museum of the Necropolis of Puigs des Molins.

Se encuentra en el norte de la isla en la carretera que va de Cala San Vicente hasta San Juan, y es una cueva natural que fue utilizada como santuario en la época fenicia. Fue descubierta a principio del siglo XX de 1900 y en ella se encontraron numerosas estatuas votivas dedicadas a Tanit, la diosa cartaginesa, que sigue todavia considerada la protectora de la isla. Se pueden admirar los artefactos en el Museo de la Necrópolis de Puig des Molins.

Si trova nel nord dell’ isola nella strada che porta da Cala San Vicente a San Juan, ed è una cavità naturale utilizzata come santuario ai tempi dei Fenici. Fu scoperta all’ inizio del 1900 e al suo interno vi trovarono numerose statue votive dedicate a Tanit, la dea cartaginese, amata ancor oggi e considerata la protettrice dell’ isola. Si possono ammirare i manufatti al Museo della Necropoli del Puigs des Molins.

3. Puig des Molins

The most important museum in the island with the biggest collections of Punic-Phoenician remains. You ou can visit different types of burial. Read more here.

Ahora mismo es el museo mas importante de la isla, ya que el museo arqueologico de Dalt Vila està cerrado, y tiene una de las mayores colecciones de restos púnico-fenicio. Se pueden visitar los diferentes tipos de enterramientos del yacimiento. Leer mas aqui.

Il museo della necropoli del Puig des Molins è il più importante dell’ isola per potere apprezzare i reperti fenicio- punici trovati nei vari insediamenti, tra cui la famosa grotta di Tanit di Sa Culleram. Se volete saperne di più leggete il mio post qui.

4. Ses Paisses de Cala D’ Hort

Visit the ancient archaeological site dating at Punic-Roman period. Enjoy the beautiful view of Es Vedra.

Os consejo de visitar el sitio arqueológico de epoca púnico-romana sobretodo para disfrutar de una maravillosa vista de Es Vedra.

Visitate l’ antico sito archeologico di epoca punico-romana che vi regalerà una bellissima vista su Es Vedrà.

5. Roman aqueduct of S ‘Argamassa- Acueducto romano de S’ Argamassa- Acquedotto romano di S’ Argamassa

It ‘s a monument dating at the roman period located in the municipality of Santa Eulalia, between Cala Pada and S’ Argamassa. You can get there by following the signs to Cala Martina and turning right for Sa Trenca; you’ll find it on the right in its 425 meters with other architectural structures discovered by arquaeologists. Unfortunately, hotels some have been built just nearby.

Es un monumento de epoca alto-imperial ubicado entre S ‘Argamassa y Cala Pada, cerca de Santa Eulaloa. Se puede llegar siguiendo las indicaciones a Cala Martina y girando a la derecha por Sa Trenca; Lo podeis ver a la derecha en sus 425 metros de largo que han quedado y que llegan hasta al mar donde se han descubierto otras estructuras arquitectónicas de la que queda muy poco. Desafortunadamente le construyeron hoteles muy muy cerca.

E’ un monumento di epoca Alto imperiale che si trova nel comune di Santa Eulalia, tra S’ Argamassa e Cala Pada. Potete arrivarvi seguendo le indicazioni per Cala Martina e girando a destra per Sa Trenca; lo troverete sulla destra nei suoi 425 metri rimasti che arrivano fino al mare dove son state scoperte altre strutture architettoniche di cui rimane veramente poco. Purtroppo la costruzione di strutture alberghiere adiacenti non ne permette la valorizzazione.

6. Torre di Sa Sal Rossa o des Carregadores

7. Dalt Vila

The old town, whose fortification built by Italian architect G. Calvi in the XVI century is declarated world heritage site by UNESCO since 1999.

La ciudadela fortificada fue construida por el arquitecto italiano G. Calvi en el siglo XVI y patrimonio de la UNESCO desde 1999.

Dalt Vila, la cittadella fortificata le cui mura costruite dall’architetto italiano G. Calvi nel XVI sec. sono patrimonio dell’ Unesco dal 1999.

8. Puig d’en Missa

Go for a walk in Puig d’en Missa, the old city of Santa Eulalia. You will enjoy the magnificent view and you can visit the Museum of Ethnography of Ibiza, with an important collection which shows the traditional rural ambient of Ibiza and also a good example of its traditional architecture.

Os consejo de dar un paseo por Puig d’en Missa, la parte antigua de Santa Eulalia, que ademas de disfrutar de la vista magnifica podeis visitar la casa payesa que alberga el Museu d’Etnografia d’Eivissa, con una importante colección museográfica del ámbito rural pitiuso tradicional ademas de ser un buen ejemplo de la arquitectura tradicional pitiusa.

Vi consiglio di dedicare una mattinata alla visita di Puig d’en Missa, la parte antica di Santa Eulalia. Oltre la bellezza del panorama che si staglia a quasi a 360° nell’ area circostante potrete visitare la casa contadina che ospita il museo etnografico di Ibiza.

9. Villages and white churches-Pueblos y sus iglesias- Paesini e chiesine

Don’t miss to visit all the little villages around the island with their beautiful white little churches.

No deje de visitar todos los pueblos alrededor de la isla con sus pequeñas iglesias blancas.

Andate alla scoperta di tutti i piccoli villaggi che ci sono nell’ isola e potrete apprezzare le piccole chiese bianche, alcune fortificate, che li rappresentano.

10. Defense Tours- Torres de defensa -Torri di difesa

There are severals defense tours around the island. Discover them and take a walk to enjoy the beautiful view.

Hay numerosas torres de defensa por toda la costa de la isla. Os consejos de organizar paseos para ir a verlas y disfrutar de la vista que ofrecen.

Ci sono numerosi torri di difesa sparse sull’ isola nella zona di costa. Potete fare delle belle passeggiate per raggiungerle ed ammirare il panorama.

Hola a todos amantes de Ibiza!!

Hoy os quiero contar de un sitio que todavía no conocía y que se encuentra muy cerca de las famosas playa d’en Bossa y Es Cavallet.

Es una zona conocida por los ibizencos como la Xanga, una zona con varaderos de pescadores, unas calitas de piedras y sobre todo la Torre de defensa que, aunque los siglos hayan pasado, sigue allí, protegiendo la isla.

La torre de Sa Sal Rossa o des Carregadores es una de las torres de defensa que se encuentran en Ibiza y fue construida en el siglo XVI en la zona entre la que son ahora Playa d’en Bossa y Es Cavallet, llamada también la “Xanga”. Se puede disfrutar de una maravillosa vista de la ciudad de Eivissa, de las salinas, de playa d’en Bossa y Formentera. La Torre se utilizaba como refugio colectivo para los pobladores de los alrededores y sobretodo para los trabajadores de la Salinas cuando la isla era atacada por los piratas turcos y berberiscos, siendo la Sal la principal riqueza de la isla. La torre permitía acoger en el interior hasta 200 personas.

Tuvo diferentes nombre. La llamaban Torre Des Carregador porque estaba situada cerca de donde los barcos de sal cargaban la producción de la Salinera, ahora en Sa Canal de que os hablé en otro post. En el ano 2008 fue restaurada por el Consell Insular.

Es muy fácil llegar. Hay que ir en dirección Es Cavallet/ Salinas y después de San Francesc hay un cartel a la izquierda. Podéis llegar también andando desde playa d’ en Bossa. Yo disfrute mucho porque amo encontrar nuevos lugares, así en la naturaleza y con monumentos que nos recuerdan nuestros antepasados.

Pero este sitio es mucho mas antiguos porque a pocos metros de la torre se encuentra un yacimiento en “reposo” de los tiempos los fenicios y romanos donde se fabricaba la valiosa púrpura, el tinte rojo que se vendía a precio de oro. Ya os hablé de la Púrpura en mi post sobre Pou des Lleò. Os Acordáis?

La profesora Carmen Alfaro, fue la que trabajó en el año 2007 en estas excavaciones y ella fue mi profesora en la Universidad de Valencia de Historia Antigua. Asi que entre Ibiza, su historia y el rojo púrpura como color de alta moda en la antigüedades diría yo que al final todo tiene un sentido! Verdad???

Hi Ibiza Lovers,

Today I want to tell you about a site that I have just discovered and that is very near the famous Playa d’en Bossa and Es Cavallet.

It is an area known for the ibizencos as “Xanga”, an area with fishing docks, a stone beach and especially the defense tower called Sa Sal Rossa or des carregadores ( Salt carrier ).

It was built in the XVI century and it is located between Playa d’en Bossa and Es Cavallet. It was used as protection from the frequent attacks by turkish and berber pirates as the salt was the main source of wealth . The tower has a large internal capacity and it can accomodated until 200 people. During the years it gets a lot of names. One of them Des Carregadores because it was near where the workers collected the salt, now in Sa Canal. Do you rember my post?

In 2008 it was restored by Consell Insular of Ibiza and Formentera.

It is very easy to reach. You should go towards Es Cavallet / Salinas and after San Francesc there is a sign on the left. You can also reach it by foot from Playa d’en Bossa. I enjoyed it a lot because I love finding new places as well in nature as monuments that remind us of our ancestors.

But this place is much older because a few meters from the tower there is an arquaeological site of the times of the Phoenicians and Romans where they manufactured the valuable purple, the red dye that was precious like gold. I already talked about the purple in the post about Pou des Lleó.

In 2007 Professor Carmen Alfaro, was the one who worked in this excavation and she was my teacher of Ancient History at the University of Valencia. So: Ibiza, ancient History, and the production of the most beautiful color for fashion at those times, i can say that everything has a meaning! hasn’t it???

Today I decided to enjoy Ibiza and its ancient origins, when a people coming from far away, from Asia Minor, called her by the name of Ibosim in honor of the god Bes.

I was looking forward to visit the Museum of the Necropolis of Puig des Molins where I had been ten years ago when it still had not been restored.

What i rememered, and i had the confirmation today, is that it is an archaeological museum of great value and interest especially regarding the Phoenician- Punic era.

The museum is located in Via Romana , just a short walk from Dalt Vila , the ancient acropolis, the city of the living beeings, near which stood precisely the Necropolis, the city of the dead .

In the ancient time there was always this connectio, lives and deads, and the two cities were always the one close to other.

Today part of a neighborhood of the new Ibiza town stands on the ground where there was precisely the ancient necropolis used from the time of the Phoenicians until the late Middle Ages, the area that today is the museum of the same name .

The museum is not big but it takes time to be seen carefully. Almost in every room there are screens with video in three languages, which tell of life, but most of all that was related to the rituals of passage towards the afterlife.

Obviously the room I most loved is the one with the different statues of the Goddess Tanit, Phoenician- Punic goddess, considered the protector of our island and that not long ago we had seen with my friend Syusy Baldy also in ancient city of Carthage, more precisely in Tophet, the holy area dedicated to the Goddess.

In one room there are also all the votive statues found in 1907 in the cave of Sa Culleram near Cala San Vicente, a place of worship of the Goddess Tanit and that you should go to visit .

I will soon write a post dedicated to it!

It’s very interesting to observe a good amount of Egyptian amulets , such as those in the shape of Udjat better known as the Eye of Horus , numerous beetles and a wonderful gold pendant in the shape of Sekhmet, the lion goddess with the solar disk . Wonderful !!!

After seeing the interior part of the museum we visit a part of the necropolis and enter into what is called the ‘ underground Mula , where you can see how the different rooms were built with the sarcophagi , although the structure is not the original one due to looting in ancient times.

So if you come to Ibiza and I recommend you take a few hours to its history and visit this museum !

Questa tranquilla giornata di gennaio ho deciso di dedicarla ad Ibiza e alle sue antichi origini, quando un popolo proveniente da lontano, dall’ Asia Minore, la chiamò con il nome di Ibosim in onore del Dio Bes.

Era già da un pò di tempo che volevo tornare a visitare il museo della Necropoli del Puis des Molins dove ero già stata una decina di anni fa quando ancora non era stato restaurato.

Il mio ricordo, oggi poi confermato, era di reperti archeologici di estremo valore ed interesse soprattutto riguardanti l’ epoca fenicio- punica.

Il museo si trova in via Romana, proprio a pochi passi dalla città fortificata di Dalt Vila, diciamo l’ antica acropoli, la città dei vivi, vicino alla quale sorgeva appunto la Necropoli, la città dei morti. Nell’ antichità vi era sempre questa connessione e le due città erano sempre l’ una vicino all’ altra.

Oggi parte di un quartiere della nuova città di Ibiza sorge sul terreno dove vi era appunto l’ antica necropoli utilizzata dal tempo dei fenici fino al tardo medioevo, area che oggi costituisce il museo omonimo.

Il museo, seppur non enorme, richiede un buon tempo per essere visto con attenzione. Quasi in ogni sala vi sono schermi con video in tre lingue, che raccontano della vita, ma soprattutto di tutto ciò che era legato alle ritualità di passaggio verso l’ aldilà.

Ovviamente la sala che più ho amato è quella con le diverse statue della Dea Tanit, dea fenicio- punica, considerata la protettrice dell’ isola e che poco tempo fa avevamo visto con la mia amica Syusy Baldy anche nell’ antica città di Cartagine, più precisamente nel Tofet, zona dedicata alla Dea.

In una sala vi sono anche tutte le statuette votive ritrovate all’ inizio del secolo nella grotta di Sa Culleram vicino a Cala San Vicente, luogo di culto della Dea Tanit e che vi consiglio di andare a visitare. Farò presto un post dedicato!

E’ molto interessante poter osservare una buona quantità di amuleti di stampo egizio, come quelli con la forma dell’ Udjat meglio conosciuto come l’ occhio di Ra, numerosi scarabei e un meraviglioso ciondolo in oro a forma di Sekhmet, la dea leone con il disco solare. Meraviglioso!!!

Dopo aver visto la parte interiore del museo è possibile anche visitare una parte della necropoli ed entrare in quello che è chiamato l’ ipogeo della Mula, dove si può vedere come fossero costruite le diverse stanze con i sarcofagi, seppur la struttura non è quella originaria a causa di saccheggi in epoca antica.

Quindi se venite ad Ibiza e vi consiglio di dedicare qualche ora alla sua storia e visitare questo museo!

Today, the charming, narrow streets near the harbour are desert, the shops are closed, blue door waiting to be opened, someone walking with his dog: probably you know all these places during the summer time ” la movida ibizenca”, with plenty of people going around.

Monumental Gate of Ses Taules stands imposing, protecting precious treasure of ancient Dalt Vila, founded by phoenicians so many years ago but still remaining the symbol of magical island of Bes.

In the Old Market you can still find some stands with local fruits and vegetables.

As you know i love Ibiza in this period of the year, and walking around these places kissed by december sun with only sound of my footsteps is like a dream to me and I’ll never quit telling you to come to Ibiza in off season and check by yourself the qualitative life you can enjoy!

Oggi le piccole stradine del porto sono deserte, i negozi quasi tutti chiusi, porte blu color cielo che aspettano di essere aperte, qualche persona a spasso col proprio cane: riecheggiano lontani gli echi della movida estiva con la sua energia dirompente e colorata.

La monumetale porta di Ses Taules sorge imponente, proteggendo come un prezioso tesoro l’ antica Dalt Vila, la città alta, fondata da Fenici tante lune orsono e ancora simbolo dell’ isola magica di Bes.

Nel mercato vecchio, nella cornica della piazzetta in stile bohemien, rimane ancora qualche banchetto dove si possono comprare ogni mattina frutta e verdura di produttori locali.

Passeggiare in questi luoghi baciata dal sole di dicembre e nel silenzio dei miei passi è per me un vero sogno e non smetterò mai di consigliarvi di venire in questo periodo dell’ anno per godervi la vera qualità di vita che l’ isola può offrire.
