Enjoying Ancient Ibiza: the Cathedral’s Square

In this rainy day i decided to have a little walk in Dalt Vila to see the magnificent view of the Ibiza town from the top of it, in the Cathedral’ s square.

You can go there by walk entering from Ses Taules Gate or you can reach it by car, as i did today because of the weather.

I would like to share with you some historical information about this monumental square to show you how many interesting and cultural place we have on the island.

The Ibiza Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Mayor better known as Our Lady of the Snows, is located at “Plaça de la Catedral” at the top of Dalt Vila, Ibiza old town district and it is one of the island’s most notable landmarks!!

It was the first church to be established in Ibiza taking place in 1235, after the Christian conquest of the island upon a muslim mezquita.

The present church was built in the 16th century with the Gothic style and it has a bell tower with a trapezoidal ground plan and a polygonal apse with five chapels. In the 18th century the church was restored by Jaume Espinosa and Pere Ferro and in 1782 Pope Pius VI made the church the Cathedral of the island.

In the Cathedral’ s square there is the Archoelogical Museum, founded in 1907 but temporarily closed for renovations, together with the Castle, the Bishop’s house, the Papal Court’s house and the old Lodge.

I have been there some years ago and i hope it will really love to appreciate again the important archeological finds from the prehistoric period to the medieval well preserved on it.

I will write soon a post about the other important archeological museum we have on the island, The museum of the Puig des Molins.

Today i was in Zara total look, a bit military style, but i feel it very feminine on it! Hope you like!!

In questa giornata un pò grigia e piovosa ho pensato di andare a fare una piccola passeggiata nella parte alta di Dalt Vila, dalla quale si può godere di un bel panorama su Ibiza città e sul porto.

Per raggiungere la Piazza della Cattedrale si può venire a piedi entrando nell’ antica fortezza del XVI secolo dal portale di Ses Taules, oppure in macchina fino alla parte più alta delle mura e raggiungerndo la piazza attarverso un tunnel suggestivo che attraversa la grande muraglia del Calvi.

Ho piacere in questo post di raccontarvi qualche aneddoto storico ed archeologico di questa piazza monumentale, soprattutto per presentare anche gli aspetti cutlurali di cui Ibiza è ricca, ma meno conosciuta.

La cattedrale di Ibiza, dedicata a Santa Maria Maggiore meglio conosciuta come Santa Maria delle nevi ( e mi ricorda l’ affresco nella chiesa di Santo Stefano a Bologna), si trova appunto nell’ omonima piazza nella parte più alta di Dalt Vila, l’ antica città fortezza di Ibiza, direi il punto di riferimento più importante che abbiamo sull’ isola ( e anche qua mi ricorda la mia Bologna con la Chiesa di San Luca).

Fu la prima chiesa costruita ad Ibiza nel 1235 dopo la conquista cristiana probabilmente sulle vestigia di una moschea araba.

La chiesa come la vediamo oggi fu costruita nel XVI sec. in stile gotico con il suo campanile, la pianta trapezoidale e le cinque cappelle.

Nel XVIII secolo la chiesa fu ristrutturata da Jaume Espinosa e Pere Ferro e nel 1872 divenne ufficialmente la cattedrale di Ibiza.

Di grande importanza storica nella piazza vi si trova anche il museo archeologico di Ibiza e Formentera, oltre che il castello, il vescovado, la corte del papa e la vecchia mercato.

Il Museo che ovviamente è di mio interesse visti i miei studi universitari di storia ed archeologia, fu fondato nel 1907 e purtroppo è momentaneamente chiuso per ristrutturazioni. Mi ricordo che lo visitai tanti anni fa e rimasi colpita da tutte le anfore puniche e romane, statuette di tanit e altri reperti di grande importanza nella storia delle Baleari dalla preistoria al medioevo.

Sciverò presto un post dedicato a un altro museo di grande importanza sull’ isola, quello della Necropoli del Puig des Molins.

Oggi ero vestita con un total look di Zara, uno stile un pò militare, ma che grazie alle sue forme gentili e pallettes, ho trovato molto comodo, femminile e adatto al luogo che ho visitato. Spero vi piaccia!:)

Hippodrome Look #2

On the pictures i am still on the beach i love near Pou des Lleò but having a sportier look than the others, perfect and convenient for an autumn walk in Ibiza.

I already spoke about the big Hippodrome’s Market in San Jordi. Do you remember the first post i wrote, look Hippodrome #1?

I think in this very difficult period that we are passing thru, with big economical problems, it’ s more than fun to go to this kind of markets, trying to find some new things and also sell those we do not use anymore. It’s not only ecologic but more conscious acting.

What i think it’s not so important how much we pay for clothes but the way we wear them.

I loved this clear lilac hoody by Replay with simple blue jeans shorts!

Total cost? 8 euro.

I came back home very happy!!!

Son sempre nella mia bellissima scogliera vicino a Pou des Lleò con un look più sportivo e sbarazzino rispetto agli altri, ma perfetto e comodo per una passeggiata nell’ autunno ibizenco.

Vi avevo già parlato del grande mercato dell’ Hippodrome di San Jordi. Vi ricordate il primo post che avevo fatto, Look Hippodrome #1?

Trovo che in questo periodo particolare, tra problemi economici, crisi, ma soprattutto di maggiore consapevolezza, divertirsi anche a questi “mercati delle pulci” a trovare cose nuove, ma anche a venderne delle nostre che non usiamo più, sia nel giusto spirito ecologista, reciclando ciò che non vogliamo e scambiandolo con chi invece ancora lo trova utile.

Poi si sa…Non è tanto quanto paghiamo una cosa, ma come la indossiamo e l’ abbiniamo.

Mi è piaciuta molto questa felpa con manica a tre quarti color lilla chiaro di Replay abbinata a dei semplici short in Jeans blu!

Totale della spesa? 8 euro!!!

Quindi son tornata a casa contenta! 🙂

My Secret Ibiza

Ibiza is like a treasure chest that you can discover little by little. There are a lot of wonderful places, mostly known by people, but there are also places hidden like precious stones that only few people know. To get there you have to take little paths, trough pine forests and rocks.

Few days ago i have been back in one of the place i like the most, Pou des Lleò. I have already written a post about its beautiful nature and archaeological and Historical importance.

It is located in the north-east part of Ibiza. To get there go to Santa Eulalia and then direction to San Carles. When you arrive to this little village, find Bar Anita, then turn left in direction of Figueral and Pou des Lleò.

When you arrive to the little beach you can park the car and you have two beautiful walks with Tagomago island view.

I will dedicate my next post to this magical island.

Ibiza è uno scrigno prezioso che si scopre pian piano, conserva luoghi meravigliosi in parte conosciuti da tutti, ma altri che ancora restano come pietre preziose per i pochi che si avventurano nei sentieri, tra le pinete e le rocce.

Qualche giorno fa sono tornata in una delle zone che amo di più, Pou des Lleò, del quale ho già parlato in un altro post sia sulla sua bellezza naturalistica che della sua importanza storico- archeologica.

Siamo nella parte nord est dell’ isola, attraversata Santa Eulalia dovete raggiungere San Carles e dopo essere passati per il paese, all’ incrocio con il famoso Bar Anita, andate a sinistra e seguite le indicazioni per Figueral e Pou des Lleò.

Arrivati nella piccola spiaggetta potete parcheggiare la macchina e sia nella parte che va verso nord che quella verso sud ci sono passeggiate molto belle con vista su Tagomago, la seconda isola più grande dopo Sa Conillera.

Hippodrome Look #1

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, one of the things I like to do in Ibiza during the winter is the Saturday stroll at Hippodrome’s market.

Hippodrome is not only a very well renowned flea market but also the biggest in Ibiza that takes place in San Jordi, In the Hippodrome, which every Saturday is transformed into an open air market.

Besides being interesting for what you can find, it is also a meeting point and a trendy weekly event in the tranquillity of the winter.

You can find pretty much everything from furniture to local fruit/vegetables, from toys to plates.

But without doubt, what interests me the most is finding clothes and accessories low cost but high quality and I can assure you, that you can find them there!

My suggestion, if you want to find good deals, is to go early in the morning around 9. If you are really patient and have got the eye you can find very interesting things.

Last Saturday, between the various purchases I made, I bought this Lace jacket with plastic fuchsia details and golden studs from an English girl who was selling new original pieces, then a white and gold “second hand” pair of shorts from Mango, a fuchsia pochette that match perfectly with the jacket and my indian style boots by Hector Riccione

Total cost? 14 euros! Not bad!

Come avevo già accennato in uno dei miei post precedenti, una delle cose che mi piace fare nel periodo invernale è la passeggiata del sabato all’ Hippodromo.

L’ Hippodrome è il mercato “delle pulci” più conosciuto, ma soprattutto più grande di Ibiza, che si svolge a San Jordi proprio dove si trova l’ ippodromo, che di sabato si trasforma in un grande mercato a cielo aperto.

Oltre essere interessante per ciò che vi si può trovare, è anche un punto di incontro e un’ evento settimanale “mondano” nella tranquillità di questo periodo.

Vi si può trovare proprio di tutto da mobili a frutta e verdura, da giochi per i bambini a piatti per la cucina. Ma senza dubbio quello che più mi attira è trovare vestiti e accessori a poco prezzo ma di buona qualità…E posso assicurarvi che ce ne sono!

Vi consiglio se volete fare dei buoni affari di andare al mattino presto verso le 9. Se avete molta pazienza e occhio potrete trovare cose sorprendenti.

Sabato scorso tra i vari acquisti, mi sono presa questa giacchetta in pizzo con dettaglio in plastica fucsia e borchie dorate da una ragazza inglese che aveva capi nuovi e molto originali, poi un paio di short ” second hand” di Mango color bianco e oro e una pochette sempre fucsia che si abbina perfettamente con la giacca e ai miei indiani di Hector Riccione.

Spesa totale??? 14 euro!!! Non male!
